# Stronger Muscles, Sharper Mind: Why Strength in Midlife Is an Investment in Your Brain

##### When most people think about strength training, they picture stronger arms, steadier knees or an easier time carrying groceries up the stairs.

###### Those benefits are real. But a growing body of research points to something many people don't expect: the strength you build in midlife may also help protect your brain.

Those benefits are real. But a growing body of research points to something many people don't expect: the strength you build in midlife may also help protect your brain.

October 18 is World Menopause Day, a global moment to recognize a transition that every woman experiences and too few feel prepared for. At DRIVE Wellness, helping midlife adults build and keep their strength is at the heart of what we do, and this day is the perfect reason for all of us, women and men alike, to rethink what strength really does for us as we age.

### **Menopause Is a Turning Point, Not a Finish Line**

Fitness touches nearly every system in the body: muscles, metabolism, cardiovascular health, recovery and mood. Real data helps people understand what's happening in their bodies and respond with clarity instead of frustration.

Perimenopause and menopause bring real changes. As estrogen declines, many women notice shifts in energy, sleep, mood and focus. The "brain fog" so many women describe is a common and very real part of this transition.

Estrogen also plays a role in maintaining muscle and bone. That means the years around menopause are an especially valuable time to build and protect strength. Here's the encouraging part: muscle responds to training at every age. The habits women build during this stage can shape how they feel, move and think for decades to come. It's why our DRIVE coaches make strength the foundation of every midlife client's plan.

### **Muscle Does More Than Move You**

We tend to think of muscle as the engine that moves us. Researchers now also describe it as an endocrine organ, meaning it sends chemical signals throughout the body.

When muscles contract during exercise, they release proteins called myokines. Scientists are still learning exactly how these messengers work, but early research suggests some of them support brain health, including processes tied to memory and learning. In simple terms, every time you challenge your muscles, you're sending helpful signals well beyond them.

### **What the Research Shows**

Scientists have found a strong link between age-related muscle loss, known as sarcopenia, and Alzheimer's disease.

A 2025 review that pooled results from several studies found that people with Alzheimer's had significantly higher odds of also having sarcopenia. Because most of those studies captured a single moment in time, they show the two are connected, not that one causes the other.

Long-term research adds an important detail. A study published in the *Journal of the American Geriatrics Society* followed more than 1,100 older adults for about six years. Those with more severe sarcopenia at the start were about 50% more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease. Notably, muscle function, measured by grip strength and walking speed, mattered more than muscle size alone.

###### That's a meaningful takeaway. The goal isn't to build big muscles. It's to build muscles that work well, so you stay strong, steady and capable in everyday life.

### **Midlife Men, This Is for You Too**

World Menopause Day centers on women, but the message about muscle applies to everyone. Men also experience gradual hormonal changes in midlife, and like women, they begin to lose muscle and strength over time without regular resistance training.

For men who were active in their 20s and 30s and drifted away from training as work and family took over, midlife is an ideal time to return. The benefits for energy, independence and long-term brain health are the same.

### **Training With Your Brain in Mind**

If strength and function are what matter most, how should midlife adults train? These elements help build the kind of strength that carries into daily life:

#### Progressive strength work

Gradually increasing the challenge over time keeps muscles adapting. Most adults benefit from strength training at least two days a week.

#### Grip and carry exercises

Farmer's carries, dead hangs and holding heavier weights build the grip strength researchers use as a marker of overall function.

Balance and coordination

Single-leg movements and stability work keep your body and brain communicating, which supports confidence on stairs, trails and uneven ground.

#### Power and speed

Controlled, quicker movements, like rising from a chair with intention or a light medicine ball toss, help maintain the fast reactions we rely on to catch ourselves before a fall.

#### Something new

Learning a new movement pattern challenges your coordination and focus. Variety keeps training engaging for both your body and your mind.

### **Small Steps, Lasting Results**

You don't need to overhaul your life to benefit. Two or three focused sessions a week can make a real difference over time, and the right guidance makes those sessions safe, efficient and built around how your body is changing.

At DRIVE Wellness, our certified coaches design strength programs for the realities of midlife, from shifting hormones and busy schedules to changing energy and recovery needs. We come to you, so training fits your life instead of competing with it.

### **This World Menopause Day, Invest in Your Strength**

Whether you're navigating perimenopause, supporting someone who is or simply want to stay sharp and independent for years to come, strength is one of the best investments you can make.
